Julie Masson, CCO for Nonprofits

A professional development community for nonprofit communicators
who want to think like a CCO.
Even if that's not your title.

"My biggest communications challenge right now is a lack of time to focus on strategy. I work consistently in a reactive state, responding to immediate requests, urgent issues, and day to day operational needs. While these tasks are important, they dominate my workload and leave little to no capacity for long-term planning or proactive initiatives. -Nonprofit Comms Club Applicant
You're not stuck because you're failing. You're stuck because you're doing it alone.
Breaking out of reactive mode isn't about working harder or hoping for a better boss. It's about learning to think and operate differently, and having support when it matters most.
That's exactly what the Nonprofit Comms Club gives you.
What if you could be the communicator who...
-
Shapes campaigns strategically instead of just executing requests?
-
Walks into your boss's office with confidence, not anxiety?
-
Knows exactly what to say when leadership asks "Can't we just post more on social media?"
-
Gets a seat at the table, not because you demanded it, but because you've proven communications drives real results?
-
This is what thinking like a CCO looks like. And you don't have to figure it out alone.

"I was functioning in "survival mode" for quite some time because I am a one-woman show. I have been in communications for over three years, but I don't have a degree relevant to my work as Communications Director. This gave me the tools and training I needed to move from surviving to thriving. I feel more equipped to take ownership of my department due to Julie's expertise, and I feel less alone after meeting other nonprofit communicators. I believe I will reap the benefits for years to come."

Meet the CCO
Hi, I'm Julie Masson.
I'm a former Chief Communications Officer with 18 years of experience leading nonprofit communications at every level from social media manager to CCO. I've worked with faith-based organizations, non-partisan policy groups, education nonprofits, and more.
I built the Nonprofit Comms Club because I've been there. I know what it's like to be understaffed and figuring it out as I go. But limited resources shouldn't mean limited strategy. Every nonprofit deserves a communicator who can think like a CCO, even if you're a team of one, even if you're just starting out.
That's what the Nonprofit Comms Club will help you become. You don't have to figure it out alone anymore.

Think of this as having a CCO on standby for the moments that matter most.
Get hands-on support from a former nonprofit CCO and a network of communicators who understand the unique challenges of nonprofit work. As a member, you'll enjoy:
-
A CCO in your corner when decisions matter most. Run draft messaging by me before your board meeting, gut-check your campaign strategy before launch, or get a second set of eyes on that tricky email to your ED. This is the strategic sounding board you'd normally pay $3,000/month for, available when you need it most.
-
Global, on-demand access. Participate asynchronously from anywhere, check in via web or mobile, and watch replays whenever it fits your schedule.
-
Monthly Q&A calls designed for real-world problem-solving. Bring your actual comms challenges, like the campaign you're planning, the messaging you're stuck on, the strategy you need to present next week, and we'll work through them together.
-
Quarterly live trainings with senior comms pros who are leading nonprofit communications teams right now, not consultants selling theories.
-
Pre-launch strategy reviews. Before you present your annual comms plan, launch that rebrand, or send that sensitive message, run it by someone who's been in the CCO seat and knows what leadership is thinking.
-
A growing library of practical resources including templates and examples you can adapt immediately, plus the Think Like a CCO course, a 6-week self-paced training to help you shift from reactive execution to strategic leadership.
-
A supportive network of nonprofit communicators who understand your workload, your constraints, and exactly why that "quick request" from your boss or teammate isn't actually quick.

I joined the Nonprofit Comms Club because I was looking for a community of people who understand the unique joys and challenges of nonprofit communications. It’s energizing to be surrounded by people who care deeply about mission-driven work. I have found a place to learn, share ideas and connect with people who do similar work. If you are looking for a community, this is the place for you.

*A Quick Note for Consultants, Agencies, and Contractors
This community is exclusively for people working in communications at nonprofits, whether you're on staff or functioning as an in-house comms person (even if you're technically a contractor).
-
You belong here if: You're doing the day-to-day comms work, navigating internal politics, limited budgets, and team dynamics.
-
This isn't the right fit if: You're a consultant/agency providing high-level strategy, or a specialized contractor focused on one service (e.g., graphic design, copywriting, social media management, email marketing for multiple clients).
If you're unsure about whether it's the right fit, send me an email and we can discuss: julie@juliemasson.com
FAQs
-
What if I can't attend the live sessions?
-
All monthly Q&A calls and quarterly trainings are recorded and posted immediately in Circle, our community platform. Access them anytime. Due to the global nature of our community, in 2026 we will offer a variety of live call times to serve members in different time zones.
-
-
How much time will this require each week?
-
As much or as little as you want! Pop in for quick advice, join live calls, or dive deep into trainings. Some members are really active in the community while others lurk and attend live calls to take it all in.
-
-
Can I really ask questions anytime?
-
Yes, you really can. Post questions in the community whenever they come up and get responses from me and fellow members. For real-time problem-solving, bring questions to monthly Q&A calls. This isn't 24/7 emergency support, but it is having a strategic sounding board available when you're facing decisions that matter.
-
-
I'm not a Director or CCO yet. Is this still for me?
-
It's EXACTLY for you! This community is specifically designed for nonprofit communicators at every level who want to think more strategically. Whether you're a team of one or part of a small comms team, you belong here.
-
-
Can my employer pay for this?
-
Absolutely! Nearly all of our members have their employers cover this as professional development. We provided a "Convince Your Boss" email template that walks through the ROI and makes it easy to request support. Download it here.
Can I cancel if it's not a great fit for me?
-
Absolutely. You can cancel anytime. That said, the biggest growth happens when you have strategic support consistently throughout the year—not just when you're in crisis mode. That's why quarterly and annual payments offer significant savings.
What makes this different from a Facebook group or LinkedIn community?
-
This isn't a free-for-all Facebook group or a public LinkedIn forum. It's a private, curated community where only vetted in-house nonprofit communicators can join. Your boss won't see your questions. Consultants aren't pitching you. And instead of endless scrolling, you get structured training and expert CCO guidance.
-
What does "Think Like a CCO" Actually Mean?
It's the difference between reacting and leading.
Instead of: "My ED wants me to post on social 3x/day"
You're able to say: "Here's the data on what actually drives engagement for our mission, and here's what I recommend."
Instead of: "I need to design this graphic"
You ask: "What's the strategic message we need to communicate, and is a graphic the right format?"
Instead of: "I'm drowning in requests"
You can explain: "Here's how communications supports our organizational priorities, and here's what we need to say no to."
Thinking like a CCO means you're leading with strategy, not just executing tactics. You know how to prioritize when everything feels urgent. You connect your communications work to organizational goals. You advocate for your work (and your team) effectively. And you make confident decisions even when resources are limited.
You don't need the CCO title to think this way, you just need the right training, support, and community.
That's what the Nonprofit Comms Club gives you.

"Thank you so much for running this cohort. You’ve been a fantastic and engaging coach and it’s been so interesting to hear from others about their challenges and how they approach things. It can be a lonely world in comms sometimes!"
